Be a Better Birder Workshops: Winter Waterfowl ID @ Greenlick Run Lake

Directions: -- Jacobs Creek Park, Mudd School Rd. Mt. Pleasant, PA -- Take Route 31 east through Mt. Pleasant toward the village of Bridgeport. Turn right onto Bridgeport Street and proceed 1.3 miles to a four-way stop sign. Go straight through the stop sign and over the bridge, veering left along the stream. Follow this to the intersection and turn left.  Jacobs Creek Park (Greenlick) will be on your right.

Description: As part of an effort to provide resources for people newer to the hobby of birding, the WBNC will be offering a new series of “Be a Better Birder” workshops centered on improving core identification skills in the hobby. This outing will focus on tips for identifying the various waterfowl that pass through PA each winter. 

Many waterfowl utilize Greenlick Run Lake as a migratory stopover point in the fall, but they can be tricky to discern, especially females from a distance. With nearly every species of duck, grebe, loon, swan, and gull regularly seen in Pennsylvania having been reported at this lake, we will hopefully see a good variety of species to practice IDs. With luck, we may even see the annual flock of Tundra Swans that stop here each November. After scanning the waters of Greenlick and having an ID workshop at one of the park’s pavilions, we may also choose to caravan a few miles up Chestnut Ridge to Donegal Lake for additional waterfowl opportunities. 

This outing is intended for intermediate level birders, but all are welcome to participate and contribute to the discussion! Restroom facilities are available at Jacobs Creek Park. Please dress appropriately for weather, as this event will plan to take place rain, snow, or otherwise barring extreme circumstances (worse weather usually = better waterfowl!).
